Donald Trump Officially Recognises Jerusalem As Capital of Israel

President of the United States of America, Donald Trump has finally and officially recognized Jerusalem as the capital of Israel
, the move which had earlier been discussed and tipped as a possibility has sparked outrage and a series of protests across the Middle East region and led to condemnation from around the globe.
Trump has also instructed that the American embassy be moved from Tel Aviv to the holy city, calling the move "a step to advance the peace process" between Israel and the Palestinians. While it didn't come as surprise to Israel's Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu who praised Trump's announcement as an "historic landmark" but Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said that US was making a "declaration of withdrawal"
with the move from its mediation role during the peace process.
Speaking at the White House, Mr Trump said the recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital was  "nothing more, or less, than a recognition of reality. " He noted that almost all Israel’s government agencies and parliament are in Jerusalem, rather than Tel Aviv
.

"This decision is not intended, in any way, to reflect a departure from our strong commitment to facilitate a lasting peace agreement," he said. "We want an agreement that is a great deal for the Israelis and the Palestinians.
British prime minister Theresa May said Trump’s announcement was “unhelpful for peace in the Middle East region”, and said the UK will not follow suit. French president, Emmanuel Macron, and the German chancellor, Angela Merkel, also criticized the move.
The Jordanian Government labeled Trump's action  “legally null” while his Lebanese counterpart President Michel Aoun said Trump's decision was dangerous and threatens the
peace of region.

An expert, Professor Dov Waxman of political science, Israel studies and international affairs at Northeastern University in Boston, said Trump
would need to determine the final borders in Jerusalem. Trump had earlier promised during his campaign that he would relocate the US embassy to the holy city as a means to please the Evangelical Christian voters. Professor Waxman said there are “very worrying concerns” that the initiative will consist of  attempts to impose peace plan on the Palestinians in which they might be pressured to give up East Jerusalem. “I don’t think the Palestinians will accept it - but this might be where the Trump administration is going,”.
